What to do when font information is unavailable from my PSD file?

When opening up a PSD file, you may notice a pop-up that says some text layers might need to be updated.

This typically happens because the PSD file includes a font that is not installed on your computer.

To find out what fonts you are missing, you will need to do the following:

  1. Select No when the dialog box above asks if you want to update your layers. Selecting yes would replace the unavailable fonts with other fonts on your machine, and you would be unable to find the information you need.
  2. Look for Text layers that are missing fonts. Text layers have a "T" icon to the left of the layer name. An exclamation point over this "T" is an indication that the font for that layer is unavailable.
  3. Note the name and weight of any missing fonts. Select each layer that has an exclamation point. The properties panel will list the font name and weight that the text in this layer is supposed to use. Write down the name and weight for each layer that has the "T" with the exclamation. Note: Make sure to check any grouped layers in folders that may be hidden!

  4. Download and install any missing fonts. You can these instructions on how to download a font. If you have a font written down multiple times because it's missing from multiple layers, you will only need to download and install it once.
  5. Completely quit and restart Photoshop. Re-open your Photoshop file. All of your newly installed fonts should now show up! You should no longer get the notification to update your fonts. If you are still seeing the notification to Update fonts, repeat the steps above to make sure you did not miss a layer or font.
