How do mentor check-ins work?
Break into Tech students choose a Career Track that includes all the classes needed to prepare for a desired career path. Mentor check-ins are strategically placed throughout the chosen Career Track to provide accountability and support. Each session is customized to the individual student's goals and timeframe.
Mentors are professionals who work in the chosen field. That means if you've selected the Design Track you will meet with designers, and Front End Developer Track students meet with developers.
What is the session like?
We'll start by talking about your goals and how to stay on track to make them happen! As you progress through the classes, we'll help you keep the big picture in mind and stay motivated! This is also the perfect time to ask any career questions you may have.
NOTE: These sessions are specifically for career and progress-related questions. If you have questions about the class material, you can sign up for a Development or Design & UX Q&A, email us at [email protected] or post in the Student Community on Slack.
Are these sessions required?
These sessions are optional but they can be helpful in breaking down your goals, ensuring that you're on the right track, and getting answers to any career questions that you have. If you'd rather check in with us via email, you can always email us at [email protected].
How often can I book a session?
We asked that you use the designated checkpoints to book a session. Please don't book all 4 sessions or multiple sessions at once. If you aren't able to find a time that works for you, please email us at [email protected] to set up a session. Please provide some days and times (including time zone) that work for you over the next 1-2 weeks, which session you're looking to book, which Career Track you're on, and if you have a preference for which mentor you'd like to speak with.
Do I have to meet with the same mentor each time?
You can meet with the same mentor or mix it up and meet with a variety of mentors with different backgrounds in tech. You'll be prompted to sign up for your first session after your first class. This helps you get a fundamental understanding of your possible career options before fully committing to a specific path. You can always change your Career Track if you decide to switch to a new choice.
What happens after I book my session?
After you choose a session time that works for your schedule and your session is scheduled, you'll receive an email confirmation that includes the Zoom link to your meeting. (If you don't receive a confirmation email right away, please email us at [email protected]) Hang onto this email - it's how you'll join your session when the time comes. First-timers, we suggest reading through How do I use Zoom and running the test to make sure your audio and video are working properly.
You'll receive two email reminders before your session - we're just so pumped to meet you, we can't help but remind you a few times. :)
What is the cancellation policy?
We know that sometimes life events get in the way, and you might need to cancel or reschedule.
As a courtesy to you and your fellow students, here is our cancellation policy:
You’re welcome to cancel or reschedule your session anytime between the day you book it and up to 6 hours before your appointment. Just click the ‘Change/Cancel Appointment’ button in your confirmation email. This will let another student schedule during that time.
Anything closer to your appointment time will be considered a no-show, and two no-shows will result in your session privileges being suspended for 30 days. We want each student to get the 1-on-1 time and support they need to succeed, so we appreciate you letting us know when you can’t make it. Hope to see you at a mentor check-in soon!
