Hello CorgiBot!

Have you noticed a super-cute new friend in your lessons? Let me introduce you to CorgiBot! It's our new AI ChatBot here to help answer questions so you can level up more quickly!

You might be thinking 😱 🤖 😱 🤖 😱 🤖 😱 🤖

But, no worries - CorgiBot has no link to Skynet. Let's talk about what it can and can't do and how you can best take advantage as you work towards your dreams and goals.

CorgiBot is a version of one of the many Artificial Intelligence (AI) Learned Language Models (LLM) - like ChatGPT. When you ask an AI bot to answer a question, it can sift through tons of information super quickly - like Google after 15 pumpkin lattes. Instead of returning a page of links, it can respond to you in normal language, sounding like a real person because LLMs have been trained on the works of several famous authors including Margaret Atwood and Stephen King. Also, they work using "Predictive Text", always trying to predict what the next word should be. Basically a very fancy version of of autofill.

So, how can you use CorgiBot? When asking a question, called a "prompt" in AI world, it helps to be as focused as possible. Typing in "My code is broken!" doesn't give a human or an AI enough information to help you. Some prompts that would be more helpful are:

  • What is the difference between margin and padding?
  • What is the Git command to push my code to GitHub?
  • How can I center an item in a row using Flexbox?
  • How does the .map method work in JavaScript?
  • What is GitHub's API endpoint for the languages used in a repo?
  • What are "props" in React?

As a designer, you can ask Corgibot for tips on completing a certain task in a design program or find resources to get more practice. Here are a few prompt ideas:

  • How do you add an image mask in Figma?
  • What is a design comp?
  • What are some resources for getting more practice with the pen tool?
  • What assets do you need to export from a design comp?

We have some great tips on asking technical questions in this  Skillcrush FAQ.

What can't you do with CorgiBot? It doesn't give great answers on what you should have for lunch. (I've tried 😁) CorgiBot also can't read your code on the lesson page. If you ask "Why does line 5 show a red 'X'?", CorgiBot doesn't have enough context to answer the question. Instead, write the prompt, "What is wrong with this line of code?" and then copy and paste the line of code after the prompt to get CorgiBot's help spotting the error.

As you've likely heard, AI can sometimes have "hallucinations" - responses that sound plausible but aren't correct. So it might be best to think of the answers you receive as a starting point rather than the final word. We hope you find our new friend super helpful as you work through your classes. Just don't expect it to place your lunch order!
